Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan (Jiu Niang Tang Yuan)

Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan is a cherished classic in traditional Chinese desserts, a delightful fusion of the rich aroma of fermented rice and the sweetness of tang yuan. As long as you have tang yuan on hand, it is very easy to make and only takes 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 10 tang yuan glutinous rice balls, frozen, homemade, or store-bought
  • 1000 ml water
  • 10 Red dates
  • 50 g sweet fermented rice jiu niang
  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • cornstarch slurry made with 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 3 tablespoons water
  • Goji berries for garnish

Instructions

  • Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the tang yuan and red dates.
  • Cook until the tang yuan floats to the surface.
  • Stir in 50g of sweet fermented rice (jiu niang).
  • Add 2tablespoon of brown sugar and stir until dissolved.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 3 teaspoons of water to make a slurry, then add to the pot and stir well.
  • Garnish with goji berries before serving.
