Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan is a cherished classic in traditional Chinese desserts, a delightful fusion of the rich aroma of fermented rice and the sweetness of tang yuan. As long as you have tang yuan on hand, it is very easy to make and only takes 20 minutes.

Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan

Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan or jiu niang tang yuan is a classic Chinese dessert that perfectly blends soft, chewy tang yuan with the sweet and fragrant notes of sweet fermented rice.

The rich, malty flavor and slight hint of alcohol from the sweet fermented rice complement the sweet filling of the tang yuan, creating a deliciously complex taste.Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan

This dessert isn’t just tasty—it also has some health benefits. Sweet fermented rice can help with blood circulation, while tang yuan provides a boost of energy.

On a chilly winter day, a bowl of steaming Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan can warm you up from the inside. And in the heat of summer, a chilled version of this dessert offers a cool, refreshing treat.

Cooking Methods I Love for Glutinous Rice Balls

I’ve explored a variety of tang yuan cooking methods, from the inventive air-fried tang yuan and the uniquely flavored pan-fried tang yuan to the traditional boiled tang yuan. Each method offers a distinct taste experience.Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan2

Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan, however, is truly special. When you place cooked tang yuan into the sweet, aromatic sweet fermented rice, the rich flavor of the rice melds beautifully with the chewy tang yuan, creating a memorable and delightful taste.

Choose Your Favorite Glutinous Rice Balls

When making Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan, you have plenty of options. You can use homemade tang yuan, like the ones I make, such as the golden and sweet Pumpkin Tang Yuan, the classic Black Sesame Tang Yuan, or the fragrant Peanut Tang Yuan.

Of course, store-bought tang yuan works just as well.

You can also use plain tang yuan without any filling to make jiu niang yuan zi. For instance, in my Glutinous Rice Balls with Crushed Peanuts recipe, the plain tang yuan is easy to make and perfect for enjoying the deliciousness of Sweet Fermented Rice Tang Yuan.

  • 50g sweet fermented rice (jiu niang)
  • 2tablespoon brown sugar
  • cornstarch slurry (made with 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 3 tablespoons water)
