Hong Kong-Style French Toast

Hong Kong French Toast is one of my all-time favorite comfort foods. It’s a sweet and savory delight, crispy on the outside and soft inside, and it’s so simple to make! If you love indulgent breakfasts or brunch treats, this recipe will quickly become a favorite.

My Love for Hong Kong French Toast

Every time I visit a Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng, I can never resist ordering some classic snacks.

From the iconic Pineapple Bun and Egg Tarts to Crispy French Toast and Hong Kong-Style Milk Tea, these treats never fail to satisfy my cravings.Hong Kong French Toast (2)

After making my first Hong Kong French Toast at home, I quickly realized it would become a staple in our breakfast rotation. My children absolutely love it, and they always ask for it!

What Makes My Hong Kong French Toast Unique

While traditional Hong Kong French Toast is typically filled with peanut butter or ketchup, I’ve added my own twist by layering banana slices between the bread.

Another difference is that I like to cut the toast into smaller, bite-sized pieces. This makes it easier to share and enjoy with the family.Hong Kong French Toast (1)

I also love serving it with a side of yogurt and fresh fruits like blueberries and raspberries for a refreshing contrast.

If you prefer something richer, you can drizzle condensed milk over the toast for an extra touch of sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices white bread (you can choose from original, whole wheat, or other flavors based on personal preference)
  • 20-30g peanut butter (adjust based on your liking)
  • 1 banana (sliced thinly)
  • 1 egg
  • 20ml milk
  • 15g butter (for frying the toast)

Garnish (Optional):

  • 11 blueberries
  • 3 raspberries
  • 30ml yogurt
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the toast: Trim the four edges of the bread slices with a knife to make them neat. Place the trimmed bread slices on a clean chopping board for later use.Trim the four edges of the bread slices
  2. Spread the sauce and add the side ingredients: Take one slice of toast and evenly spread the peanut butter on its surface, reaching the edges to ensure every bite has peanut butter. Once the peanut butter is spread, arrange the banana slices neatly on top, spreading them evenly.ake one slice of toast and evenly spread the peanut butter on its surfacearrange the banana slices neatly on top
  3. Assemble the toast: Gently place the second slice of toast on top of the one with the banana slices, press lightly to help the two slices stick together more firmly. 4. Make the egg-milk mixture: Crack 1 egg into a shallow bowl, then pour in 20ml of milk. Use chopsticks or a whisk to beat the egg and milk together until well combined, forming a smooth egg-milk mixture.Use chopsticks or a whisk to beat the egg and milk together
  5. Coat the toast with egg-milk mixture: Place the assembled toast into the egg-milk mixture, ensuring each side is evenly coated. You can let the toast soak for a bit to absorb more of the mixture, around 15-20 seconds per side, but be careful not to soak it too long, or it will become soggy.Place the assembled toast into the egg milk mixture
  6. Fry the toast: Heat a frying pan over low heat, add 15g butter, and let it melt completely, forming a shiny coating. Place the egg-coated toast into the pan. Fry on low heat, flipping the toast regularly to ensure each side becomes golden brown. Each side should take about 2-3 minutes to cook. Be careful not to burn it.Place the egg coated toast into the panFry on low heat, flipping the toast regularly to ensure each side becomes golden brown
  7. Decoration and plating(optional): Once the toast is fried, place it on a plate. Add two spoonfuls of yogurt in the center of the toast. You can decorate the top with fresh fruit slices, such as strawberries or blueberries, according to your preference. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of bread?
Yes! You can use whole wheat, brioche, or any bread you prefer. The texture might change slightly, but it will still taste great.

Can I make this without peanut butter?
Of course! You can substitute with almond butter, Nutella, or even cream cheese for a different twist.

Can I prepare this in advance?
While it’s best enjoyed fresh, you can assemble the toast the night before, then just dip in the egg-milk mixture and fry it in the morning.
