Snowflake Crisp (Xue Hua Su) is a popular Chinese New Year snack. It costs a lot outside, but you can make it at home in about ten minutes. This is a recipe I’ve used for many years, with just the right sweetness and texture.

If you’re having trouble finding freeze-dried strawberries, you can make Cranberry Snowflake Crisps instead.

Snowflake Crisp

What is Snowflake Crisp

Snowflake Crisp is a trendy and popular dessert in recent years. It combines the milky flavor of nougat, the crunchiness of crackers, and the rich taste of various nuts and dried fruits. Its appearance is as white as snow, and because milk powder is added, it has a snowflake-like texture, hence the name Snowflake Crisp.

Ingredients

  • Crackers:Usually small, resilient crackers like Ritz are used. They provide a crispy texture and make a delightful crunching sound when chewed.
  • Marshmallows:This is one of the key ingredients. High-quality marshmallows melt well when heated, binding the other ingredients together and giving the Snowflake Crisp a sweet and soft texture.
  • Nuts:Common choices include almonds, peanuts, cashews, and pumpkin seeds. Nuts add rich nutrition and a crunchy texture, and their proteins and unsaturated fatty acids are beneficial for health.
  • Dried Fruits:Examples include dried strawberries, raisins, cranberries, and figs. The sweet and sour taste of dried fruits complements the sweetness of the marshmallows and the flavor of the crackers and nuts, adding layers to the taste of Snowflake Crisp, making it sweet but not cloying.
  • Milk Powder:This not only enhances the milky flavor but also, when sprinkled on top after making the Snowflake Crisp, makes it more attractive, as if covered with a thin layer of snow.

Ingredients:

  • 200g marshmallows
  • 50g butter
  • 50g milk powder
  • 170g small crackers
  • 120g nuts (such as pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, almonds)
  • 20g freeze-dried strawberriesSnowflake Crisp Ingredients

  2. Add Marshmallows:Add the marshmallows and stir until they melt and combine with the butter.

      Hi Betty,
To store snowflake crisp, follow this step.
Choose an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid to keep out air and moisture.
Let the crisp cool completely before storing it to prevent condensation inside the container.
Place the crisp inside the container and seal it tightly.
Store the container in a cool, dry place like a pantry or cupboard, or in the fridge if you’re in a humid environment.
Or If you have a heat sealer, you can also store Snowflake Crisp in a sealing bag like I do.
