Sweet red beans are a delicious and versatile ingredient that can be used in many dishes.

Compared to red bean paste, sweet red beans have a more distinct texture with noticeable bean particles, making them ideal for recipes like red bean toast.

This recipe is simpler and quicker than making red bean paste. You only need to cook the beans until they are soft, then add sugar and honey.

For making sweet red beans, you should use the round, smooth red beans, the same type used for making red bean soup with sago, red bean soup with rice balls, and red bean paste.

(Choose the left one)

Ingredients:

  • 200g adzuki beans (red beans)
  • 40g granulated sugar or rock sugar
  • 270ml water
  • 50g honey (adjust to taste)

Instructions:

Prepare the Beans:

  • Rinse the adzuki beans thoroughly.
  • Soak the beans in water for at least 12 hours or overnight to soften them.
  • After soaking, drain the beans and briefly blanch them in boiling water for about 5 minutes to remove any raw bean taste.Blanch the red beans in boiling water

Cook the Beans:

  • Place the soaked and blanched beans into a rice cooker.
  • Add 40g of granulated sugar or rock sugar and 270ml of water.Add water to the beans
  • Set the rice cooker to the “cook” setting and let it cook until the water is absorbed and the beans are tender.

Sweeten the Beans:

Once the beans are cooked, stir in 50g of honey. Adjust the sweetness according to your taste preference.Add honey to the beans

Cool and Store:

  • Allow the sweetened red beans to cool before using them in your recipes.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage.

Notes:

Use adzuki beans for this recipe, not mung beans or other types, as they are the traditional beans used for making sweetened red beans.

Blanching the beans helps reduce the raw bean taste, but you can skip this step if you prefer.

Feel free to adjust the amount of honey or add condensed milk for a different flavor profile.

Sweetened red beans are perfect for incorporating into various dishes, from desserts to savory recipes. Enjoy the delightful texture and taste of homemade sweet red beans!
